I had my daughter at a very young age while I was a runaway ward-of-the-state (orphan). Out of fear of separation from my daughter, I gave birth under a false name. This false name was also listed on my daughter’s birth certificate as the mother. For years I lived in fear of going to jail for falsifying legal documents. Being the single parent of a child who I technically had no legal guardianship over was especially stressful. This situation also kept me from pursuing her father for desperately needed child support. It was 6 years before I had the courage to reach out to someone for help.
